Tips for Teeth: Tooth Care for Kids and Adults

Something we all have to worry about on a daily basis is the way we take care of our oral hygiene. If you fail to care for your teeth, it will cost you lots of money to have them fixed. Use this advice to ensure that you are caring for yourself.
  • Flossing helps remove plaque on and around your gum line and should be performed at least twice daily. When flossing, gently work the dental floss up and down between each tooth. Do not subjugate your gums to harsh flossing procedures; instead, use a gentle hand and waxed dental floss to help protect your gums.
  • Teach your kids proper dental habits from the beginning. When your children get their first teeth in, brush the teeth for them. Once your child is old enough, teach him how to brush teeth on his own. Get a big timer and put 2 minutes on it for your child to make sure he is brushing for long enough, and take him to his first dental appointment when he turns three.
  • It is important that you go to the dentist to have your teeth cleaned every six months. Having a professional cleaning helps to get rid of tarter build up and polishes your teeth so that they look their best. It can also help to spot cavities that might be hiding where you can't see them.
  • Eat fresh fruit rather than dried fruit to protect your teeth's health. Dried fruit sticks to your teeth, exposing them to more sugar and leading to more cavities. If you must eat dried fruit, make sure to brush, floss and rinse as soon as possible after eating so that you reduce the risk of cavities.
  • Many young children are terrified by the thought of going to the dentist. Help them to see a dentist as their friend. Pick a pediatric dentist that has a friendly waiting room for kids to make them feel more comfortable.
  • If you are only going to brush twice a day, do it when you are first getting up and when you finally go to bed. Early morning brushing gets rid of morning breath and deals with anything that settled in during your sleep. Brushing at bedtime helps your plaque-fighting saliva out, since it is going to dry up overnight.
It is not hard to have a great dental care regime. If you follow the suggestions outlined above, then you shouldn't be looking at a large dental bill. You will want to consult a dentist before you attempt anything associated with your dental health.
